fabrics and yarns from wool

WOVEN AND KNITTED FABRICS, YARNS, FIBRES AND NON WOVENS FROM WOOL

Wool is the most used animal fibre. It is a natural proteine that is renewable, water repellent, flame resistant, odour resistant, breathing, easy to wear and easy to maintain. In many ways wool is a very sustainable fibre. Not only it is 100% biodegradable but because of its high elasticity it doesn’t need to be ironed or only on low temperatures. In addition wool is a fibre that regenerates itself by airing and doesn’t have to be washed very often.

WOVEN FABRICS FROM WOOL

Ecological Textiles offers both woven wool fabrics of organic and conventional quality. We have divided these qualities into different 'weight classes' (light, medium, heavy weight). These range from semi-transparant voiles to heavy twills.

KNITTED FABRICS FROM WOOL

Most knitted wool fabrics are made from boiled organic wool, in melange and uni colours. Boiled wool means that the wool was first knitted and then fulled. This gives another effect than the more commonly known fulled woven fabrics. Additionally we offer woolen faux furs that are made from Icelandic wool.

NON WOVENS FROM WOOL

These nonwovens from wool are made for filling and insulation. They are available in several thicknesses/weights and are applied in active apparel, sleeping bags, puffy winter jackets, parkas etc.

Wool is perfect for these applications because of its high breathability and high moisture absorbing capacity.

YARNS

Yarns for knitting or weaving. These are all naturally (vegetably) dyed woollen yarns. They are produced in several colours all in Nm 28/2

FIBRES

By raw fibres we mean raw wool that is untreated (only washed) and can be applied for e.g. stuffing. The raw wool from ECOLOGICAL TEXTILES comes from Campina Heathlandsheep that graze near our office and that we collect.

We also offer organic wool bobbles, that can also be used for stuffing.

TINCTORIAL TEXTILES

Tinctorial Textiles is a collection of fine organic wool fabrics that are dyed with natural dyes. Thirteen colours, vegetably dyed with the classic dyes indigo (blue hues), madder (red hues) or weld (yellow hues).

Wool fabrics from Ecological Textiles

Wool is one of the oldest animal fibres known to mankind. Archeologic evidence has shown that wool was already used for felts in the 5th millennium BC., only flax seems to have been used at an earlier stage. Today, most wool comes from merino sheep in South America (the Patagonian plains of Argentine and Chile) or Australia. The Merino is a race that was already bred in the 14th century, and provides the finest and softest wool quality.

In our collection you’ll find fabrics made of conventional and organic (GOTS certified) wool. GOTS is the leading standard for organic textiles, and fabrics carrying the GOTS label represent the ultimate in ecological and sustainable production. It is your assurance that the most ecological and socially responsible methods have been used throughout the entire production process. This means amongst (many) other things:

  • no GMO

  • no harmful chemicals

  • no child labour

  • no dyes or inks that have been classified as allergenic

Even though GOTS is ‘only’ a textiles processing standard, you can be sure that certified wool is organic and that animal welfare is important. Organic wool is produced conform international standards for organic livestock production. That includes: natural feed and forage which is not genetically engineered or treated with synthetic hormones, no use of fertilizers or pesticides on grazing land, no prophylactic use of drugs such as antiparasitics, and no mulesing.
